These 27 photographers tell us how Ukraine is travelling along a historical path of struggle for freedom, for its borders, the right to exist, culture and future. Toch zijn er veel verhalen uit Groningen, Friesland en Drenthe die met elkaar verbonden zijn.\u003cstrong\u003e \u003c\/strong\u003eIn de zeventiende eeuw werkten Friese universiteiten en kaartenmakers voor de VOC en de WIC. Schepen uit Groningen voeren naar Ghana om tot slaaf gemaakte mensen te verhandelen. In de achttiende eeuw woonde Jan Albert Sichterman, VOC-directeur in Bengalen, in Groningen. Hij verdiende veel geld en liet daarmee een groot huis bouwen aan de Ossenmarkt. Ook verzamelde hij veel objecten. Een deel van zijn verzameling is nu nog te zien in het Groninger Museum. In de twintigste eeuw kwamen Molukse KNIL-militairen en hun families naar voormalig kamp Westerbork. Ook kwamen arbeidsmigranten naar Friesland om te werken in de landbouw en industrie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"a-h4 u-mb-2\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKunst als manier om verhalen zichtbaar te maken\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eArchieven bewaren niet alles. Sommige verhalen verdwijnen of blijven onbekend. Kunstenaars kijken anders naar archieven dan historici. Zij stellen vragen over wat wel en niet wordt bewaard en verbinden verhalen op een nieuwe manier.\u003cstrong\u003e \u003c\/strong\u003eDe acht kunstenaars deden onderzoek in lokale archieven en spraken met mensen uit de omgeving. Voor het project maakten zij fotografie, video’s, installaties en een grote muurschildering. Elk kunstwerk is verbonden aan een specifieke plek en gemeenschap. De werken maken moeilijke en vaak verborgen verhalen zichtbaar en bespreekbaar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"a-h4 u-mb-2\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat Knots Knot Knots\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDe titel \u003ci\u003eWhat Knots Knot Knots\u003c\/i\u003e komt uit een uitspraak van Donna Haraway: “it matters what knots knot knots.” ¹ Daarmee bedoelt ze dat de manier waarop je dingen met elkaar verbindt, bepaalt welk verhaal je kunt vertellen.\u003cstrong\u003e \u003c\/strong\u003eHet project vertelt daarom niet één groot verhaal over het koloniale verleden. In plaats daarvan laat het verschillende lokale verhalen uit meerdere eeuwen naast elkaar zien. Zo wordt duidelijk hoe deze geschiedenissen met elkaar verbonden zijn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"a-h6 o-editor-content\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNoorderlicht ontwikkelde dit project omdat het belangrijk is om ook in Noord-Nederland aandacht te geven aan deze geschiedenis.
