Koos Breukel took a close-up portrait of the hands of photographer Sally Mann: no face, just two hands, stained and dark from work. Mann photographs with large cameras and old, labor-intensive processes, with chemicals in the darkroom and close to the earth. The stains tell what a face would conceal, and so a portrait of hands also becomes a portrait of photography itself, of the physical work behind every image.
